Intern Experience - Mala

Hello my name is Mala, I was 17 when I started my internship. I was in college for one year and thought I would like to try something new.

My first rotation went really well as I learnt new skills and got used to the Hospital. The Hospital is not that hard, you can’t get lost as it is an L shape. I made new friends and colleagues in the department. My mentor helped me understand the rules and how to dismantle the cages, how to put away when delivering the stock meaning dropping them off to the wards. I was very nervous as I wanted to do good. It was hard at first as everything was heavy. I did struggle a little but, I didn’t want to give up.

In my second rotation I moved to the Omnicell department. I wanted to do something active and not sitting down. Omnicell is stocking and putting away the items in cabinets. I found it confusing at first because when putting stock away you need to find where it goes and need to click the button to say how much you should put in.

In February, I was offered a job in the Omnicell department. I was very shocked, I literally couldn’t believe it. My Uncle was happy and I then called my Auntie to let her know and she was happy! However, I had to wait until I was 18 years old to apply and I was sad because I had to wait four months, which felt like forever! It was a long process to apply and take courses, but I finally got an e-mail to stay I could start on Monday 9th June 2025. I was nervous and excited to start my working life.

I would like to thank my Tutor/Manager for helping me understand what this course was about, giving encouragement, help and advice. She doesn’t do things for me but she helps me to get to the answers.

I want to thank my job coaches, who have supported me by advising me about what work is like, what to do in different situations, what to do if I have a problem. They are good listeners and great to talk to.
